In this task, I will be evaluating how I felt the set up process went and will be discussing the questions below:
A brief description of how the setup went?
The setup went well, and we completed it in good time without any issues apart from technically. We set up a kit, adding an Audix D6 to the bass drum. Then we set up a stack amp for the electric guitar, and also a bass amp for the bass. Then we set up two microphones on the piano. one for the strings, and one for vocals as there were going to be a few performances using them both together. Then we set up an SM58 at the front for the vocalist in a stand. Three monitors were used, two at the front of stage, and one to the left of where the drummer will sit. It was an easy set up as fortunately, everyone knew what they were doing, and we were all willing to give a hand to one another.
Did you come against any issues when setting up?
Surprisingly, we didn’t come across any issues when setting up. The only issue we did come across was when it came to the technical sides of things. Basically, we couldn’t get a signal through from any of the three monitors. Although some of the boys did get slightly confused on how to attach the toms to the kit, it was quickly solved due to others helping.
What were they and how did you deal with them?
The signals problem with the monitors, happened whilst we were doing a sound check. Everything was working apart from the monitors as no one could hear their instruments coming through them. We solved this in the end by figuring out how to use the desk properly and it turned out that we weren’t using the right buttons. Although it took a while for us to figure it out, it was eventually done and we had completed sound check and made sure everything sounded good.
Do you feel the live sound sessions have given you a better understanding of your instrument?
The live sound sessions have definitely been very helpful. Without them, I wouldn’t have any clue about most instruments and what microphones are appropriate to use on them and also how they really worked. It was all very useful information and it has given me an insight to how setting up a stage actually works. Doing it in Swinburne Hall was another great way of learning, as the skills I learnt were used and I could put my knowledge to the test.
Do you feel you need to improve your skills in the process more?
Yes, it would really help if I set up stage at college more, as I want to be able to set a whole band up without questioning myself if I’ve done it correctly.
If so, how do you intend to do that?
I will plan to set up any instrument that isn’t what I play during live sound at college, as it will help me understand other parts of the set up, instead of just my own which I know really well. I’ll also pay more attention to others and how they set up their own as they will have more knowledge then me.
