Unit 11 – Task 2

Evidence of how i’ve applied for UCAS over the last months, and what i’ve done to work towards it.

This below is my personal statement that i wrote, and used for my UCAS application:

When I was 12 years old, I started drum lessons and it became a frequent hobby of mine. Then, in Year 10 at 15, I soon realised it was more than that, it was an obsession and I knew I wanted to continue with it at college level. The reason I got into drumming was because my grandad and my aunt used to play, so I always saw it as something rather cool to do as I look up to them both. The other huge reason I love to play is because I go against the stereotype, which was part of why I am quite passionate about it. The stereotype being that the majority of drummers are male. I like proving people wrong as I have had people assume I’m not as good as a male drummer, even when they are at the same level as me. I was involved in a band at secondary school, with three of my closest friends at the time. We performed at every open evening and the Christmas concerts, which I enjoyed thoroughly as I love performing. The band also got invited to perform at the Jack Petchey speak-out in January 2020 to open up the evening, and also at an Essex County Council event at Cressing Temple in July 2019. Currently at college, I am in a band called ‘Some Place Else’ and we are working on becoming a functions band in the near future. This year I have restarted grades in drums, having stopped them for a while and just spent time learning techniques. Currently, I am waiting on my Grade 5 results as I just completed the online exam. Assuming I will pass, I’ll move onto Grade 6 and hopefully get it completed before the end of next summer. Another reason why I love being a musician, is because I get the chance to be involved in many projects, For example, I have been asked to play on a few tracks some artists have written on my college course. It’s given me the opportunity to experience a little bit of the session musician life, which I have enjoyed thoroughly so far. Also enhancing my musical skills to be prepared and talented enough to just join in on a song and do whatever the writer needs me to do. In my spare time, I work a part time job at a clothing store (Next), three days a week. I enjoy it as it has given me the opportunity to make new friends and also work more on my social skills, although they are quite good already. I’m an excellent team player, as well as working as an individual too. A good example of this was when I attended the 24th World Scout Jamboree as a representative of the Suffolk Contingent. To get there I had to raise £3850 by myself and I ran many charity events including things such as an auction and a sponsored bike ride. This to me proves that I am able to put the dedication into something I really want, like going to university. Going to university is a big challenge for me that I want to fulfil. It’s been a goal of mine, to go, since I was 15. I want to further my education so I am able to do well in the music industry, I will get a good grade on the course I am currently studying. Attending university will allow me more opportunities, open more doors for me and allow me to meet many new people who will also be involved in the industry in the near future with me, letting me network and have new contacts that I can use after I finish the course.

Here are some links i used to look at universities/colleges :

https://www.ucas.com – i used this to apply for university, and also look at my options!

https://www.bimm.ac.uk – this is what i used when i realised i wanted to apply for BIMM colleges, and i requested to go for some tours at certain colleges.
