UNIT 8 BLOG

The aim for Unit 8, is to be able to show you what being a session musician is like. I will aim to have a cover song, ready to perform, an original song (drums written by me). And finally (last minute change), I will also aim to have a recorded song with some boys from the tech course. I will play the drums on a track for them and will have written it myself.

Unit 8 – Context

This album, has the exact vibe I wanted to create (drum and song wise) for my Unit 8. I am mainly talking about the song ‘Saturday Night’ that I have written a drum piece for which is by Emma Sampson, a singer on my course. This album inspired the drums for that as the song has a similar dreamy vibe to ‘To Zion’ and a cool groove like in ‘Ex-Factor’. I love the album and the whole energy of it is laidback but also very present. It’s impressive and it’s definitely in my top 5 albums of all time It is so brilliantly written and has been created and driven by so much talent and character. The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill by Lauryn Hill creates an energy that hasn’t been portrayed anywhere else (at least, not that I know of) and I’d love to be able to recreate it as best as I can for Emma’s song. The drum grooves are always reasonably simple, but the snare/rim-click is accented and it really stands out in the song for me. That might just be because I am a drummer but I am going to try to include that in the composition I make for the as it’ll help give me the vibe that I am looking for. Another reason I love this album is because it was a powerful moment for young black women, breaking the silence of black feminist issues and reclaimed their power. The album is beautiful and the songs are all as individually unique as the others. This inspired me to create almost a memorable drum beat, as I want it to stick in peoples heads, as even though the song doesn’t have as special a meaning, I want people to remember the song because of what I play. The beat I have created for it so far is decent and I think it is catchy. The connections I have made may seem quite loose to whoever may be reading this, which I understand, but to me it makes complete sense. This albums songs have a big inspiration on most songs I play on the drums anyway, not just this. The drum piece I improvised for Harry and Dylan’s’ track was also based around listening to this album!

As I have probably mentioned in the units before this, I am a lover of feeling the groove and the audience also feeling and dancing to it, as well as you. There is something about an audiences reaction that I love, whether it’s to my own performances or watching someone else’s. That’s why I chose Alicia Keys Tiny Desk as part of my inspiration as from the many performances I’ve seen on this channel, she has has the best audience reaction. She gets them to interact and sing with her and she enjoys hearing it just as much as them. I feel like she understands what it is to hear a song you love and have the need to make the most out of it because she always gets people involved for their own benefit. I’ve had multiple people come up to me when rehearsing ‘Saturday Night’ with Emma and Sean and they have all said they’ve loved the song and they’ve been ‘humming the guitar lick all week’ or ‘the chorus is stuck in their head’ which I always find to be such a huge compliment. Wit the song I’ve done for Harry and Lewis, I was in the studio recording it and was making sure I was playing a simple yet groovy beat, and when I would look out to the people watching, they all had their heads nodding and I could see Lucy’s feet tapping. I took this as what I was playing to be good, and it gave me much more confidence and I was able to add little extras into the song as I went through even though they weren’t planned. This gave the song that little bit extra, and it was all thanks to seeing how the ‘audience reacted’. This NPR Tiny Desk below is a hug inspiration to me and showed me what even the power of a smaller audience can do.

All I can really say for this video below, is it is one, my favourite live performance and two, it’s just perfect. There is no other word for it because it’s just that good. I know that is cringe as most people just know this as a typical karaoke song and a ‘classic’ which it is, but to me it’s a lot more. This performance below is one of the reasons I love to do it myself. Tina Turner has the most amazing energy throughout her set, but this song really tops it off. It has a lengthy introduction, maybe around 4/5 minutes? But every second amazes me. When she says “Nice and Rough” during the intro (twice), the crowd go absolutely crazy and it mesmerizes me. The crowds vibe completely changes when the music builds up and explodes for that 5ish seconds and it brings a tear to my eye. Sounds silly but it does because it makes me want to be there. I envy the crowd so much and would pay any amount of money to have seen her live. The reason this inspired me is because of the way it made me feel. I experience a frisson of excitement and it has massively helped to inspire me to become a musician. One of my goals in the future is to make a crowd feel this excited about music, even if it’s only like 100 people, it will still be such an accomplishment. That’s why I love the song ‘Grace’ by Jeff Buckley so much (one of the songs I am doing for Unit 8). I chose this because there is breaks in the song where it is just guitar )like the intro to the song) and we all of a sudden come in with a big crash. It isn’t the exact same of course, but the energy is similar and it is something that would make the crowd go crazy if it was the right audience. This video below is one of my biggest inspirations and the thing is, I’m not a massive fan of the actual recorded version, it’s just the live ones as they’re so much better in my opinion. But yes, this is my last video that inspired me for my context as to why I have done the songs I have below for my Unit 8.

The biggest challenge I am going to face when carrying out the goals I have set, is actually learning how to create a beat that will stick, or how I will make someone dance to my music and my performances. It’s because this is actually a rather hard thing to master in my opinion as you just genuinely need to be a really good musician I think, but you also need to understand the audiences point of view when they’re watching you too. You need to take into consideration how you would want to feel when listening to music or watching a live gig, but also have to multitask by giving a god show too ad making yourself happy too. This is where the research I will do below comes in handy. I will hopefully use this for what I plan to do in my Unit 8 and I will do my best to overcome the challenges.

Unit 8 – Research

The first part of researching that I did, was about memorable drum beats. I found this article that is attached above and it shows the top 20 most recognizable drum beats. I knew pretty much the majority of these songs and the drum lines are iconic. This gave me good insights to what I want to add to the songs I’ve been given where I am writing my own drum piece. For example, the number one song on there is obviously ‘We Will Rock You’ by Queen. That is so memorable and everybody knows it, just hearing the beat without the music behind it, you instantly know. Other songs on there are ‘Superstition’ by Stevie Wonder, ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ by Nirvana, and ‘Come Together’ by The Beatles. All these songs are extremely famous and I can guarantee the vast majority of people will know all these songs inside and out. One thing that is similar in all these songs, is not only is the groove the same throughout the song and not much changes, they are also really simple grooves, considering the level of talent the drummer has. It makes sense as I suppose memorising a hard beat would be much more difficult and not everyone would be able to remember. For Queen, their beat was a simple bass drum, bass drum and clap. So easy. Nirvanas was a little more difficult but it had the memorable, fast snare fill going into each chorus which is always very fun to play and peoples favourite part of the song. For Stevie’s ‘Superstitious’, it is a groove that involves a loose hi-hat and a very unique and tight snare sound. Because of the snare sound being different from most, it makes it easy to identify, especially in the intro too as it starts off as the snare playing four notes before the groove actually starts. The reason I researched this is because I would love to be able to captivate with the listeners of the songs I do for Unit 8. Reading this has helped give me an idea for what I’d like to involve in the drum pieces I write.

For my second part of research, I wanted to see how I could learn a song quickly. Not so that it’s rushed, but so I can get to grips with what I’m learning, quicker then normal because if I want to become a session musician, this will benefit me in the future as well as now. This website seemed good and the steps were simple and made a lot of sense. I will be using this technique to learn the song ‘Grace’ by Jeff Buckley, as I want to try and learn it reasonably quick so I can get rehearsing. Step 1 is to read the score, I did this as my drum teacher wrote out a drum score for me and I read through it to roughly understand what I needed to play. Step 2 is to listen to recordings. I started by listening to the actual song via Spotify and got to know it quite well after a few listens. I then listened to live versions to see how different they sounded and if they did any alternate grooves that sounded better and I could incorporate it with my playing of the song. Step 3/4/5 is to play through the piece slowly and break it down into chunks, learning each part individually and taking my time on any specific sections that are harder. Then step 6 is to play it all together slowly and then gradually keep practicing until you think it is ready. I think this website has a great guide to learning songs if you aren’t up to a high level of sight-reading and are talented enough to learn most songs with ease. I am glad I found this article as it will be really useful for me when learning ‘Grace’ with my band for this unit.

^ This is the link for the next article.

The article above is what I will talk about for my third part of research. It’s a chat forum but I though that what was mentioned was really interesting and it contained some useful information. The question basically asked how to write drums for a song where the whole song has already been done but is just needing their percussion. This is similar to ‘Saturday Night’ by Emma Sampson, as she has already written the song, and Sean Blake had written his bass part for it. The same also goes for the song I helped do with Harry Collins and Dylan Lewzy. They came to me with a complete song, all it needed was drums. The person who answered this question said ‘ I find it much easier to play along with the band and see where I can fit in and add to the overall feeling of the song.’ This makes a lot of sense to me and I think I will take this into account when working it out with Emma, Harry and Dylan as it has made me feel less stressed. I will ask them to send me the track or to play along with me in person so I can work out what sounds good by experimenting with different grooves. I will also ask them what sounds good so they can give their opinion and I can work around what they might want for their song. This little chat forum helped me a lot as I am now feeling less pressured and I am also going about the song a different way to what I usually would. This way is definitely better.

Overall the research has helped me so much and I am definitely going to put it to use.

Unit 8 – Practical Skills

The only practical skill I have used is this warmup above. I practice it once everyday and it helps loosen up my hands and just makes everything easier to play. I originally learnt this just over a year ago but it took me a while to master the whole thing as I wasn’t used to doing technical skills. However, now I find this, not easy, but very helpful as it lets me practice my doubles, 5 stroke rolls etc…

Unit 8 – Evaluation

  • Week 1 (12th – 18th April)

This week I gathered some ideas with my college friends as to what I should do for Unit 8. Ive decided that I want to do two performances that will show a range of skills. One song is going to be a drum piece that I have to write for my friend Emma’s song called ‘Saturday Night’ as she asked for me to help her do. I will get to work on this over the next few weeks after she shows me what it will sound like, and then how she wants the drums to sound. I have spoken to Lewis Hollidge and Harvey Bullard who are also on my course and we have agreed we will all choose a song to perform together that is out of our skill level to really push ourselves. This is a great way to see what we can really do because in only a few weeks, we will hopefully be able to play a song that we’d never even thought of attempting before. This will be discussed via social media over the weekend as at college we were performing another song so were more concentrated on that for the time being.

  • Week 2 (19th – 25th April)

In week 2, we have discussed what song I will be playing with Lewis and Harvey! After what was probably three days of disagreeing on songs, we narrowed it down to three and then eventually all agreed on the same one. The song we decided on was ‘Grace’ by Jeff Buckley as I had never heard it before and gave it a listen and was instantly intrigued by its sound and vibe. It has 6/8 time signature which is already a difference for me as I usually stick to playing in 4/4, therefore making it slightly challenging already. The song is over 5 minutes long so there is a lot to study and I have asked my drum teacher (outside of college) to help me with any part I will get stuck on. With the song ‘Saturday Night’, Emma Sampson will be singing and playing guitar, she has shown me what it will sound like and given me a basic beat to work off. Sean Blake will play bass on the song and I think he has already sorted that out. I will be working on this over the weekend and playing around with grooves that suit the beat she has given me.

  • Week 3 (26th April – 2nd May)

This week a lot happened! I went to a practice room outside of college called Unit One Studios with Emma and Sean to attempt a rehearsal of ‘Saturday Night’ and I have attached a video below of what we have so far. We managed to put together the whole song and play through it with a rough idea of what we want. I will be asking my teacher Jim Read if I can improve on anything to make it sound even better. I am happy with how it sounds for the moment, but I know I will most likely be changing it in the next few weeks before the final performance. There is definitely plenty of room for improvement for all of us and I will be working hard on it for the final performance as I want it to sound the best it possibly can. With the boys, we started working on ‘Grace’ and have all started learning it at home. When we came into college on the Friday, we were able to play the into, and this happens I think three/four times in the song, I am currently working on the verses as they involve a groove on the toms which is hard to understand for me so I have got in touch with my drum teacher and he is going to give me some advice on how to play that section. Overall, I’d say this has been a pretty successful week and I am excited to get to work properly on both these songs.

  • Week 4 (3rd – 9th May)

This week (Wednesday) on ‘Grace’, we managed to get through the verses as I have now worked out how to play the tom sequence and I have practiced it so much that I don’t find it as challenging anymore. I can vary it too if I make a mistake and it will still sound pretty good. Harvey needs to practice a little more as he is still confused on the timing and when it changes from the intros to the chorus, but he will be practicing at home too so hopefully we can get that finished within the next week. On the Friday of this week, I rehearsed with the boys more on the song ‘Grace’ and there has been a massive improvement! Harvey can now play and get the timings right, and we are able to play through to the second choruses with only a few minor mistakes. The mistakes being a wrong note played or me hitting a crash cymbal at the start of the wrong bar because I have forgotten what bar we are on. We performed ‘Saturday Night’ this week in workshop with Steve (one of the teachers) and he seemed to really like it and gave all of us many tips which have given us a great idea on how to improve. This is the performance we did, I didn’t have access to any toms apart from the lower so it doesn’t sound as good. We performed as if it was a tiny desk and used barely any mics so this is why. I think it went well:

  • Week 5 (10th – 16th May)

This week we rehearsed Grace again, and have now managed to get to the bridge without any mistakes which is amazing! I am struggling to remember when it changes from crash cymbals back to the tom sequence still but I know I will get there with more practice and listening closely to the song. The reason tis is taking longer then normal is because the song is 5 minutes and 22 seconds, which is almost double the average song. There is a lot more detail then most songs too which is another great reason for why we chose it as it is different and displays our abilities better as it is a more intricate song. Since this week, I have definitely become more confident with the song as I was originally nervous because I had never heard it and had only been performing songs I’d listened to a crazy amount of times. With Saturday Night, Emma and Sean have been busy with their own projects too so we haven’t been able to rehearse together, but I have been practicing to a click at home so I can keep working on the song until it becomes second nature. I will continue to practice both these songs at home as well as college.

  • Week 6 (17th – 23rd May)

I got some feedback from Jim on the Wednesday of this week when me, Emma and Sean played it through for him. He has given me many tips as he is a drummer himself and I trust his judgement a lot. We have decided to change the ending so we build it up and then just end on a loud crash and strum of chords. We’ve basically added 3 more bars and are building it up with more complex fills each time. I have a video that I will attach here of the latest update on how I am playing the song. I have added a different bass drum pattern in the verses to make it sound more funky, and have also added more crashes which will hopefully sound cool. I am just playing along to Emma’s guitar in my air pods so you will only hear the drums. I am much happier with this piece now and I am confident with it. It’s enjoyable to play and I think I have achieved how I wanted it to sound originally.

With ‘Grace’ we have now worked out how to play the bridge and I am remembering when the switch from playing on the crash to the ride is as it is a weird timing and doesn’t feel natural so it’s been hard to practice it but now I think I’ve got it. I will be working hard on this over the next week as I know time is getting shorter so most of my time will be spent on it.

  • Week 7 (24th – 30th May)

More news! I have been asked to supply a drum track to a song that Harry Collins and Dylan Lewzy have created. They are on the tech course and have sent me a track to be recorded on, and I have recorded that this week. It went well and I think they are happy with the results. It was a chilled bluesy track and I loved it. I gave what was a boring/simple beat, more variation and fills to suit the track better and make it more interesting. I will supply a link if I can as it will hopefully be released before the due date, if not I will send a copy but it won’t be the final cut. It was pretty much improvisation as I had barely anytime to practice, however my improvisational practicing in past units has come in handy and I made the track sound super groovy and cool. With Saturday Night, I have just kept going through it so its constantly fresh in my mind, but with Grace, there has been massive improvements. I have learnt the song the whole way through and so have the others. We even managed to get a recording for it which will be shown below. I find it difficult to remember the timing still but hearing Lewis’ guitar is helpful and I am usually able to work it out. I am happy with how it’s going so far and I am hoping we will be able to get it videoed for next week and be able to post it below as the final product.

  • Week 8 (31st May – 6th June)

These are the final videos I have below and these are the final products:

Grace – Jeff Buckley

My POV

Whole Band POV

Saturday Night – Emma Sampson (drum piece created by me)

  • Unfortunately we were unable to perform this song as there wasn’t much time due to Emma and Sean being quite busy with their own units, however the song was definitely performance ready. I am disappointed that we didn’t get to do it, but I still worked hard for it and will continue to practice it so we can perform it in the future.

UNIT 7 TASK 2

Saturday Night by Emma Sampson:

This is a song that I was asked to write a drum piece to on my course by my lovely friend Emma Sampson who is the vocalist ad guitarist in this song. I am playing along to her guitar in my earphones for this, and this was my first full attempt at getting through what I had decided to play for her song. I enjoyed playing it but there is definitely something missing and I will be asking a few peoples opinions and seeing how I can change it as I want to add a little more variation.

This is my second week and I am much more confident with the song! This is me rehearsing with Emma and Sean and we have all agreed it sounds good however we are still yet to ask anyone for a more professional opinion. The fills are slightly more interesting now as I am featuring more toms but its not too much considering it is a calm/more of a slow song. I still think there is a lot to be changed so I am going to be working on it a lot in the next week, but one thing I do like is the contrast of the sound between both crash cymbals that I use.

Although you can only hear the drums in this, I have changed the song so much and I am really confident with it now as I am happy at how I’ve decided to change it. We got an opinion from Jim at college and he gave me some great ideas on how I could change it. We have sorted out a completely different ending which involves 3 fills that I made up and am really happy with how they sound as they aren’t difficult but they do make the song sound good. I used improvisation for the fills throughout and at the end as it is benefitting me to practice that so I can widen my skills on it. The song is at a reasonable pace so I have enough time to try and plan ahead without panicking. We’ve also added a few variations to the groove to make it sound a bit more interesting. I’ve practiced this so many times with and without Emma and Sean and I have grown to be quite proud of my playing in thus which has of course improved my confidence and I can’t wait to perform this to people and show my skills.

Mardy Bum by Arctic Monkeys:

First of all, I am a huge fan of this song so I was very excited to put effort into this and learn it. This first attempt is decent considering I was in time, although it was boring and there wasn’t much feel to it as I was still concentrating on what I was actually playing. It will be improved a lot over the next week as I want to make this so much better. With improvisation on the spot, I could make this sound much more interesting so I will attempt to add something else next time I’m playing and just see what happens.

This is my second performance and my second week of playing the track ‘Mardy Bum’. I enjoyed it much more and feel like there is more groove to it, now that I am more comfortable with playing the song and I feel a little more freedom. I am relaxed and it’s allowed the song to have more feel and it doesn’t seem as ‘robotic’. The fills were kind of different but I sort of stuck to what I was taught and it sounded good. The timing isn’t amazing as the backing track is quite odd but I did my best. I will keep practicing until next week so I can be more comfortable with it. My aim is to let it feel more natural.

I improvised so much more on this and it feels so natural to play already. It’s second nature and I don’t even need to concentrate on the basic groove, leaving me space to improvise and play with much more confidence. I am happy with how this final performance has turned out as it has made me feel like I am a decent drummer and I would love to be able to perform this with my band as I think we would do a really good jib with it. The fills in this were slightly different due to me wanting to change it up a bit and experiment with what I can play off the top pf my head instead of something that is scripted. Overall, I am very happy with this piece and will definitely be rehearsing it more.

Fluorescent Adolescent by Arctic Monkeys:

I struggled a lot here as I was quite unsure of the timings, despite thinking I knew the song inside and out just from listening. I haven’t been able to improvise on this track yet as it’s early doors and this was my official first attempt without looking too much into it. All I can say for this is I definitely need to practice. The timing was off and I didn’t even do the bridge as it’s quick and I couldn’t keep up with it at all. I shall be working on this song over the next two weeks and seeing how I progress with it.

This attempt was around 4 days later (into the next week) and I would say it is better. It is definitely not good, but it is an improvement for sure. My timing was reasonably good and I grew more confident with the changes in the song compared to last time. I added a little hi-hat groove every now and again but will add it more next time as it sounded cool and was complete improvisation during playing. I enjoyed playing it more this time and didn’t feel as pressured but next time I am hoping I will like it even more.

This is my third and final performance of this song for the unit, however it won’t be the last for myself as I want to keep learning this song and maybe even perform it next year in workshop with my band as I do like this song a lot. I grew much more confidence in this song and I enjoyed playing it. I still struggled with the bridge but that was just because I simply lost the rhythm, but I improvised and also attempted to get it back. I added more of the mini hi-hat grooves and it made it sound cooler in my opinion, plus I love playing them. Although it’s not perfect, I am happy overall with the improvement I have made. My confidence is better, my improvising skills and adding fills is also coming along, however this isn’t much room to add any in this song apart from right at the end.

UNIT 5 TASK 3

In this task, I will be evaluating how I felt the set up process went and will be discussing the questions below:

A brief description of how the setup went?

The setup went well, and we completed it in good time without any issues apart from technically. We set up a kit, adding an Audix D6 to the bass drum. Then we set up a stack amp for the electric guitar, and also a bass amp for the bass. Then we set up two microphones on the piano. one for the strings, and one for vocals as there were going to be a few performances using them both together. Then we set up an SM58 at the front for the vocalist in a stand. Three monitors were used, two at the front of stage, and one to the left of where the drummer will sit. It was an easy set up as fortunately, everyone knew what they were doing, and we were all willing to give a hand to one another.

Did you come against any issues when setting up?

Surprisingly, we didn’t come across any issues when setting up. The only issue we did come across was when it came to the technical sides of things. Basically, we couldn’t get a signal through from any of the three monitors. Although some of the boys did get slightly confused on how to attach the toms to the kit, it was quickly solved due to others helping.

What were they and how did you deal with them?

The signals problem with the monitors, happened whilst we were doing a sound check. Everything was working apart from the monitors as no one could hear their instruments coming through them. We solved this in the end by figuring out how to use the desk properly and it turned out that we weren’t using the right buttons. Although it took a while for us to figure it out, it was eventually done and we had completed sound check and made sure everything sounded good.

Do you feel the live sound sessions have given you a better understanding of your instrument?

The live sound sessions have definitely been very helpful. Without them, I wouldn’t have any clue about most instruments and what microphones are appropriate to use on them and also how they really worked. It was all very useful information and it has given me an insight to how setting up a stage actually works. Doing it in Swinburne Hall was another great way of learning, as the skills I learnt were used and I could put my knowledge to the test.

Do you feel you need to improve your skills in the process more?

Yes, it would really help if I set up stage at college more, as I want to be able to set a whole band up without questioning myself if I’ve done it correctly.

If so, how do you intend to do that?

I will plan to set up any instrument that isn’t what I play during live sound at college, as it will help me understand other parts of the set up, instead of just my own which I know really well. I’ll also pay more attention to others and how they set up their own as they will have more knowledge then me.

UNIT 5 TASK 2

Below I will be showing photos of what we set up in a live sound session in college last week.

This is the kit that we set up, this was taken whilst we were getting all the parts we needed.
This is the D.I. (Direct Input), which we used to put all the lead into and connected to the sound desk to make it easier to control all the amps and microphones.
This is the amp we used for the bass, we placed an AKG D112 as it can handle the low spl’s.
This is a mic we used for the piano, set up on a stand.
Here we used an Audix-D6 for the bass drum.

Here is an SM58 that we set up for the vocals.
Here is the monitor we set up, and then placed next to the drum kit so the drummer is able to hear.
This is the mic stand we used for the vocals.
This is a “stack amp”, we used this for guitar, and it contains an amp, plus a head amp on top which supplies all the controls.
These are the two monitors we used at the front. They helped the vocalist and guitar/bass players.

UNIT 8 PROPOSAL

Section 1: Rationale (100 words)

Q1. How much progress have you made since September 2020?

In my opinion, I have made an enormous amount of progress since September 2020. I’ve massively improved my skills as a performer/drummer, working on my confidence and playing. I am now able to perform in college without feeling too anxious or shy to be seen on stage. Also, my skills and techniques used whilst playing have been worked on during the last few months and I can already see the benefits it has given me as a musician. During my time on the course, I have also gained a huge amount of knowledge from music business, live sound, history/context, and even music theory, which I found incredibly difficult. Overall this course has already improved my talent and educational skills so much, I cannot wait to lean even more in Year 2 of college.

Q2. Specifically, what have you learned during units 1-7?

In Unit 1, I leant many drum techniques that I can use to work on specific skills I need to improve on. For example I needed to improve my sticking technique, so I found out how to do this and then filmed and evaluated myself working on this for a number of weeks. It has improved my stamina a lot as a drummer and I have gained confidence when playing from this. In Unit 2, we studied theory. Before September 2020, I had very little knowledge on the subject, but I was soon taught how to understand the way music is written and how to study and then play any song, just from listening to it. Now, when I listen to music, although I still don’t entirely understand it, I am able to work out the structure of any song I listen to and why they made the choice of chords/grooves they have used. In Unit 3 I learnt music business. Due to already studying it in secondary school, I was quite aware of about most of the lessons we were taught. However, I was unaware of the legal/contract parts of the industry, and now have full knowledge on what to look out for during my career/in the future. I was made aware of what is a scam and what isn’t, which will definitely benefit me in the future. In Unit 4 (my favourite unit) we studied decades and the music that was produced and released during them times. We looked at the decades 1920-2020, and I learnt about how music has changed and developed overtime, and also understanding how todays music has been inspired by music from the 1920s, which I find so interesting and how music and artists from back then, have impacted so much on today. In Unit 5 we were taught Live Sound which involved a lot of information. Setting up the correct mics for instruments, amps, mic placement and also setting up instruments. Also how to draw a stage plan, which I enjoyed doing as that will definitely help me in the future as I will most likely have to draw one for somebody, or be on the receiving end of it and have to set up a stage from a plan I have been given. In Unit 6, I covered physical, technical and communication challenges. This involved me finding what challenged me, and then performing three songs that enable me to face them head on and attempt to overcome them. This unit was a great confidence booster as I soon filmed the videos, and then realised that I was able to get over these hurdles that I had set for myself, therefore improving, and gaining more confidence in myself. For the final one, Unit 7, it was almost similar to Unit 6 as I had to basically improve on techniques/challenges and evidence it. However here I showed my progress over 3 weeks doing 3 different videos per week. I found this challenging, but very enjoyable.

Q3. What does this mean to/for you?

This means that, now having an incredible amount more of knowledge then before I joined college, I am a few steps closer to being able to hopefully have a career in the music industry as a musician. Learning all these skills and information has really helped and I can already guarantee that it’ll benefit me in the future. Overall, it has put into perspective, how difficult the industry really is. It’s made me understand how hard I need to work on musicianship skills and also my confidence as a person. I’m hoping the second year of college will just improve that even more, and also my project for Unit 8.

Q4. How has your learning/experiences during Units 1 to 7 influenced your choices for Unit 8?

Although I found the Units 1-7 quite challenging, they improved my playing skills by a huge amount in such little time, which I am amazed. For my project, it’s only right that I put these to the test so I am going to play/perform in my project. Units 1/6 and 7 were the specific units that have influenced me to do this as they involved mainly improving skills and performing.

Section 2: Project Concept (200 words)

Q5. What is the concept behind your project?

My main aim, is to show you two good/solid performances that I can put together in a matter of weeks to the best effort I can. I’m hoping it will show performance skills, confidence, playing skills and good creativity with my drumming as I will be making my own drum part for one of the songs.

Q6. What are the sources that have inspired it and will support you developing it?

Tiny Desk has really inspired me with the performance side of things. They inspired me to want to play live, and make audiences enjoy music and learn to feel the groove. I want to have people dance or even have their foot tapping along to my music. I am genuinely just inspired by live performances! I love gigs and watching people perform. That is what got me into music so being able to perform in a gig too, would be s amazing.

Q7. What resources do you need to carry out this concept within the timescale?

College is a major resource, as I am going to need to rehearse the pieces I am going to be performing. I can of course practice at home too, but my performances involve others so it’s best to practice with them too so I am able to get the most out of it. A big resource is the people I am working with on the two songs. Good communication is a major skill and is very much needed for this.

Section 3: Evaluation (50 words)

Q8. How will you record your evaluation throughout the project?

I will do a weekly update on how I’ve been getting along with the project and where I am with rehearsing/completing the project. Also I will hopefully add some videos of me rehearsing what I am going to be performing.

Q9. How are you going to record decisions that are made during the project?

I will blog them as I said above. I will write down my thoughts on the project and will also note down if I’ve decided to change any of the ideas I originally had. I will make sure I am honest in my writing as you will then get a feel for how challenging or difficult I may find the project.

Section 4: Project action plan and timetable

Write a plan with dates of what you are going to do and when. Include all the time that goes into the project, including sourcing material, information, and independent work.

Week 1 (12th – 18th April) : Discuss and decide what I am going to do. Work with the boys and decide what song you’re going to play with them.

Week 2 (19th – 25th April) : Start to make plans with people and get ideas floating around. Talk to Emma and Sean and see if they have a song ready so I can start writing a drum part to it.

Week 3 (26th April – 2nd May): Begin deciding what to play for the song with Emma and Sean. Start learning ‘Grace’ for other performance. Start on the WordPress as need to write down what is going on.

Week 4 (3rd – 9th May): Rehearse with both groups on the songs and decide if anything needs changing. Get a teachers opinion and also friends as they will have great advice.

Week 5 (10th – 16th May): Become confident on both songs and aim to feel performance ready by the end of the week.

Week 6 (17th – 23rd May): Perform the songs and upload it all to the blog. If needs to be re-filmed, try and get it done this week as may not have anytime after this.

Week 7 (24th – 30th May): Have everything hopefully finalised and filmed. Help the others if they need anything and try and upload the videos to YouTube so it can then be added to the blog easily.

Week 8 (31st May – 6th June): Final updates on blog, hoping it has all gone to plan and get everything completed to a good level that I am satisfied with.

UNIT 7 TASK 1

3 things that I need to improve on:

I want to improve on my confidence because that is a key skill that is needed in the music industry, especially on the performance side, which is what I am interested in getting into. This is mainly because I will often be on stage or playing in front of people, and being confident is important as it will help improve the performance.

I also want to improve my improvisational skills as it is highly important that I am able to improvise and recover if I ever forget or make a mistake during a set. If I suddenly miss a drum or a cymbal during a performance, I need to learn how to recover from that and be able to adapt to the changes that need to be made. The songs I have chosen to do in my Task 2 and 3, will hopefully help develop this to a certain extent.

My final improvement that I want to work on, is my fills as they are usually a big part of any performance when playing the drums. Fills separate sections of the piece and define the difference between each part. Sometimes I struggle to make up fills in my head as I haven’t covered a wide range of fills. This all comes under improvisation as well. The fills I tend to use at the moment, are very basic and easy as I’ve never had to use many in the songs that I’ve performed, and if I have, they’re only half a bar long so I don’t get a chance to do much.

UNIT 5 TASK 1

For this task, I will show research on my blog, of the equipment needed to operate as a live sound technician. I will show the equipment that would be needed in order to set up for a 4 piece rock band with a set up of:

Drums, Guitar x2, Bass and 2 vocals (one for the frontman and one for the drummer.) I will show the microphones used for each instruments and why I would use the microphones. I will then include a stage plan of my set up.

The microphones I would use for each instrument are:

Drums – An Audix D6 for the bass drum, because it is great at capturing low frequencies and keeps the roundness of the low end without distorting the sound. It’s also the mic you’d use for live sound and has a cardioid polar pattern, whereas in the studio, you would use a PG52. For the snare, I would use an SM57 because of it’s high sound-pressure levels and very solid build quality. I could also choose to use SHURE PG81s as overheads so I am able to capture the cymbals because they are very sensitive and pick up a wide range of frequencies. They are great for gaining maximum sound. If I wanted to capture the toms, which is quite unlikely most of the time, I would use a Senheiser E604 as it can handle a wide range of frequencies and dynamics. This mic has a hun compensating coil and has low sensitivity which is able to handle noise.

Guitar – For the guitar, the mics are usually plugged into a stack/combo amp as they’re able to control everything but if you wanted to capture an amplified guitar using a mic too, you can choose a Senheiser E906. It features a switchable presence filter and has a super-cardioid polar pattern. It has a crisp and snappy sound. For an acoustic guitar, you would use a RODE NT1000 as it’s a condenser microphone which means it’s very sensitive and able to pick up even the smallest sounds from the strings.

Bass – For a bass guitar, you would use an AKG D112 on the bass amp because it can handle high sound pressure levels and a large amount of vibration. It gives the bass a crunchy, deep feel and is able to produce a great sound without distorting which is very important and a good reason to use this microphone. It has cardioid polar pattern.

Vocals – For singer and drummer, you will use the SM58 as it is a very good quality mic. It handles your voice with clarity and leaves any background noise behind. The mic helps deliver a warm, crisp sound every time. If there was no SM58, you could resort to the 57, however it is only really used for high sound pressure levels. For the drummer, it will have to be positioned carefully as it needs to be in a place where the drummer can move to sing into it, whilst also having to play but so it doesn’t get in the way of them. This can be sorted put beforehand. For the singer, they can just use a mic stand at the front.
